What Problogger’s don’t teach you about making money blogging

by Rob Rammuny on January 27, 2010 · 35 comments

A lot of bloggers fail because they have their expectations set to high. They enter blogging with the mindset that “I can make six-figures my first year online” and the truth is you probably won’t. Problogger’s are quick to share how much money they make and the techniques they use to do it, but what they do not tell you is how much they have worked for their techniques to pay off.

If you’re a blogger who thinks making money online is going to be easy, think twice. I’m going to reveal with you some of the behind the scenes of what Problogger’s don’t teach you about making money blogging.

The missing link to “making money blogging”

I’ve met and seen a lot of frustrated bloggers who have enrolled in some kind of eCourse or “claimed” to follow the same techniques another successful blogger does but yet they’re not seeing the same results. One thing you do not often see or even hear from bloggers is how hard they work, and how long it has taken them to get where they’re at.

Money doesn’t come over night

Serious income does not come over night, it doesn’t come over a week either. It takes months and months of hard work, and depending on how much work you put into what you’re doing and if you made the right decisions you will profit from it in the long run. I’ve been in both worlds. I’ve worked online and I’ve worked offline. I tried almost every technique that involved bringing in serious income over night, but what it resulted in was me losing income.

When you first enter blogging and wanting to make money from blogging, think of yourself as a baby. Your first 9 months you’re doing nothing but being held by others, and you finally learn to crawl. By age 1 or 2 you’re walking and by age 3-4 you’re talking away. Making money from blogging is no different. You’re going to have to learn that making money blogging is not a overnight process, it takes time. Most bloggers who make six-figures or more from blogging have worked at it for 5+ years.

Making money blogging is serious work

I literally slaved months and countless nights on the computer before I started seeing my first descent amount of income online, and even then it still wasn’t where I wanted it. People complain about working 40 hours a week, I work 40 hours in 2-3 days when I have the chance, and so do a lot of other bloggers. If you want to make money blogging you better be ready to work hard. And no. . . I’m not talking about working hard 2-3 months and expecting to get on a plane to Hawaii and relax. You’re going to be doing this for a very long time.

Running your blog from auto-pilot

Now you’re probably wondering, how do all these other bloggers run their blog from auto-pilot? They’ve worked very hard to build up email lists, large amounts of traffic, popular products and depending on what they’re doing they outsourced to staff. Heck, if I wanted to I could leave my blog for a couple days and be completely fine, but I’ve been busting head  over heals for more than 11 months now.

You need to wake up and realize your blog is your business

You need to realize the moment you decide to start making money is the day you’re turning your blog into a business, and you need to treat your blog like a business. Treating your blog like a business will help you achieve the landmarks you set for yourself, and it will also help you prepare for the unexpected.

Realize that what works best for them, will not always work best for you

This is something I learned the hard way. I would throw several hundred dollars into eBooks trying to find out what other bloggers did to make money blogging. Then it hit me. It’s no guarantee I can make money doing what someone else does. I have to find out what works best for me and work hard at it.

When bloggers share with you technique’s they use to make money online this should only be used as a process of planning. See what others do, brainstorm an idea you think will work well for you, and do it.

Group Discussion – What’s your thoughts?

Hopefully you didn’t waste several hundred dollars into a eCourse thinking next week you’re going to be the next bill gates. Then you skip on down to this article and realize you’ve just been smacked back to reality.

Share your thoughts. What do you think about this? Do you think Problogger’s are leaving out a crucial part of information that is vital to the success of making money online, and by them doing so it has led to another frustrated blogger?  Did you ever know making money online actually required work? Gasp! Join the discussion and share your thoughts on this topic, whatever your opinion may be, I want to hear it.

First let me say I am truly impressed by your content. I heard about you through Lisa’s blog and I am happy I found this page.

You are right – Very few tell you that a lot of time goes into writing a blog or doing any successful internet business. That is why it’s so important to focus on a topic you truly enjoy…so it doesn’t feel like work. Writing is hard work. For that very reason I teach people how to bring their websites/blogs to life by adding videos and audio to their websites: Audio and Video Riches .

Readers like to be engaged on several different levels. Studies have shown people learn by reading, watching and listening. So while I do not enjoy writing as much, I do enjoy how much easier and faster it is to create videos and audios to post to a blog. This is why I will likely use those tools instead of your traditional written blog.

I will be sure to follow your blog am enjoying it.

Rob you have heart to write as good and as hard as you do. Your like a much older person in your fifteen year old body. Here’s to your continued success with bloging. You know you are in touch with a new trend. No one has time for long articles, books etc. any more. Even Monolopy has a fast quick play version. You are going to reach a lot of people with your blogs!

That is exactly it Rob! I am loving your content. I am tired of bloggers promoting an easy journey because it definitely creates a false expectation to newcomers.

Rob,

Great article. Blogging is certainly not a passive income type of job. For those people wanting to make money blogging, I suggest that they create a blog, write great content and explore how to make money online using other methods.

It takes a lot of time to build up a blog to the point it starts to make a lot of money. But, if you also create other money making sites while still focusing on your blog, you can start making money sooner.

Here is the good thing…sometimes it works out for the best that you do not make tons of money over night because this really is a process. In my eCourse Secret eBook Riches, I walk through the mistakes I made early on. The big one was choosing the wrong payment system. I lost $10,000 dollars in sales the first week I launched. I have tons of customers from all over the world and it was a huge disappointment to experience that early on. Even though the documents stated they accept International payments “They DID NOT”.

You only get one chance to earn your customers trust, so when their payment doesn’t go through the first time – You have likely lost that customer FOREVER! So you really have to be ready. You have to walk through the blueprint of someone that has done this already or it can be heart breaking if you are Not really ready.

To me, getting rich quick means getting broke quick. You shouldn’t go from 0 to 100,000 in one week. You’ll probably end up driving yourself broke.

And you’re right with your customers, the second you lose their trust it’s almost impossible to gain it back. Nine time’s out of ten you will not gain it back.

Very nice article you wrote here, Rob! I couldn’t agree more with the fact that people need to learn what works for them and stick with it. It’s kind of like making me, a blogger, work in as an artist – it won’t work. Not only do I have no artistic ability, but I am not passionate towards that subject!

You’ve just said everything, Bilal, everything. You just hit the nail right on the head. The probloggers just lay down the steps or directions without telling what you will encounter on the way to your final destination. Make money blogging requires a whole lot and tonnes of patience and hard work.

I think that it isn’t that Probloggers are leaving stuff out…it is that people are assuming that what they are seeing is easy and they are looking for the “quick fix” to make a living online. Online work, no matter what you are doing, is just that, work. I know my standard day begins at 7 am when I get the kids off to school and it usually ends at 1 or 2 am if I am doing well. Most folks don’t understand what is involved in business. Choose something you love doing, because you are married to it until you can outsource some of the work, and even then, you still have to make the tough decisions. That’s life – and business, online or offline!

Enjoy your blog. Keep up the good work!

In a way I can agree. But what about the bloggers that plaster all over their sites “I made $30,000 this month blogging” they make it seem easy. So it’s easy for a person, especially someone with no mindset of blogging or business to get fooled and pulled in by that.

You get where I’m going?
P.S: Glad you liking the blog :D

Yeah, it is a problem when you hear these guys that claim they made a huge bundle of cash. What a lot of them leave out IS the hours spent AND the money they may have spent to make the $30,000.

If a person is willing to keep trying, they will eventually have some success at blogging, or IM, or whatever. Honest, focused effort is the key – that is the only way to get better at this – or anything else, for that matter.

Have an awesome day!

Hey Rob! Speaking of hard work I’m up in the weee hours of the morning putting in my hard work! :) LOL but lucky for me I didn’t invest in much for my blog. I was fortunate to learn over time in other words I heard the ins and outs of it over a period of time and not all at once. So I was prepared and aware of the work.

However, it wasn’t until recently that I began to implement the hard work. I understood what it took but I didn’t really understand the extent of the work that it takes until recently. Which is why I’m up at 3am working behinds the scenes of my blog.

I think many probably do have the misconception that they can expect to get paid blogging over night. If I ever schooled anybody on the benefit of bloggging, knowing what I know now I would be sure to emphasize to them the hard work that it takes above all.

Yes at some point in time you can expect a 6 figure income but it’s going to be built on days and months of consistent hard work. Not just writing either. You can post quality content to your blog everyday and that won’t be enough. It’s important but not enough. It takes SEO, Marketing, using social networking, guest posting, commenting, on a consistent basis (keyword consistent basis).

Great post! I think this is the truth that a lot of bloggers, who are starting out don’t want to hear but need to hear. Keep sharing the truth my friend!

Glad to see you up working hard Jarrod! I surely remember the nights I stayed up until 5-6am working on my blog. Pulling 2-3 hour sleep days, and pushing 20 hour work days. What a time that was.

Glad to hear you would emphasize the importance of needing to WORK hard for your blog, and that money comes AFTER. Or else, they would be set up for failure.
