Shut up and just do it

by Rob Rammuny on January 12, 2010 · 41 comments

Being in both the business and blogging field I’ve seen hundreds, if not thousands of failures from both bloggers and entrepreneurs. Now don’t get me wrong, these people are some pretty good people and know what their doing. Really. The issue they face though is the procrastinate and procrastinate about the launch of their site or company.

When you prepare to launch a blog or a company do you. . .get your domain, template and let the site go live? Or do you buy your domain, template sit down for weeks writing content, planning ways to market your site and pray for it to be a success? If your the type of person that waits and waits to do something, and after weeks or months of planning you finally do it, you probably already lost out on plenty of potential clients and hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Now if you just realized that you have been making this big mistake don’t go around screaming “fuck, fuck, fuck what have I done? How did this happen” you’ll probably just end up pissing up your family. Just shut up, and just do it. Literally.

Time is money

You don’t need to know that E=MC2 to know that the more time you waste the more money your losing out on. When me and a former partner of mine were working on How2beaYoutubePartner, a business we launched in December 2009 we didn’t focus on every single detail of the site to make it perfect. We designed the logo’s, put down enough content to keep the members satisfied, made sure we had our legal material (didn’t want to get sued by some asshole) and we launched the site.

I mean why wait? We had the foundation of the site down, and everything was ready to go live. Anything else we needed to change or add we just did it along with site updates. Our end result. . .the site went live as expected, customers flying in, site went viral around the web and even went from a 0-2 page rank in 30 days.

Accept reality, your product will never be perfect

Time and time again I hear “I won’t release this product until it’s perfect.” The true reality in business and blogging to is nothing is perfect. Take Google for example, Google is over 10 years old now and Google is nowhere near perfect. But they accept that, and their willing to make improvements. If that doesn’t convince you, think of this, how will you ever know if your product/service is “perfect” if it has never been released to the market? Don’t give me the “I put myself in a customers position” crap either. That helps IMPROVE your product but you will never know the ending result until it’s released to the market and you start getting feedback from your customers.

Avoid killing your reputation

One thing you want to make sure you never do, or at least try to avoid when releasing your product, service, blog or whatever the hell it may be at a quick rate is destroying your reputation. By far your reputation is one of the most vital keys you must have to maintain a good business. If you do not feel your ready to put your product, service, blog or whatever on the market. Do a beta test of your site, make sure everything is running smooth, send it out to a couple buddies and if you get positive feedback. . . take your site live by all means.

Shut up and just do it

I’ve said it again and again and again. Shut up and just do it. Stop wasting your time trying to find the “perfect formula” when it will never happen if you haven’t even put it on the market yet. The time is here, the time is now DO IT.

That is exactly! Sometimes we are to busy being perfectionists that we never end up launching anything!

Totally with you on that one. I think it’s a human flaw that needs to be broken.

You are just so right, Bilal. People have to take action now before it’s too late because you don’t know what might happen in the future. So the thing is take action now and then progress along with your business or whatever that it is.

Great article! :)

Exacly Shirley, I like how you said “You don’t know what might happen in the future” you make a very good point with that one.

Very useful, and the kick up the arse I need for my latest project (should be launched in the next week or so). I’ve found that I’ve been procrastinating a lot. I’ve got 2 or 3 projects I want to launch soon, and I’ve been deciding which one I want to do. I kept going back and forth when, actually, it was quite obvious which one I should do :p

I’ve now found that, once I’ve started getting the design done for me, I’ve purchased the domain, it’s going a lot faster, but even so I know that once I’ve got that all, I’ll probably take ages writing the content lol :$

Glad you liked it. Best tip go ahead launch it ASAP and who gives a hell how long it takes to build a great amount of content, as long as you provide kick-ass articles that your readers love, they will grow with you along with your blog. Same goes for customers ;) keep it up man

I would certainly put myself in the ‘doer’ category. I generally launch most of my sites and make progressive changes and additions. As a designer I get a bit fidgety after a design has been sitting on a site for a while, so with Cogroll I generally make design updates every week, trying to find the right combination.

By launching early, and then building as you go along, you can gauge the effect of each change on your target audience.

I love your attitude then James, just do it. I was never a designer type of guy so I just edited my website wherever I could, I usually outsource to my designers haha.

I like how you brung up the launching it earlier and build as you go, one thing I’ve noticed is that your customers will grow with you and they will understand and help you grow along the way. Whats your thoughts on that?

Rob, awesome post here bro.

I remember listening to a Frank Kern interview with John Reese and they were talking about how if you never release a product, you never make any money. He also mentioned that “you’ll know if your product sucks because people will be asking for their money back”

Who really cares if you screw something up? You are absolutely right with the google example and I’ve found the same to be true with products I’ve released, if something isn’t working…it will get fixed, usually in updates or revisions of the product. Authors do it all the time, Movies do it with sequels and pretty much every other area of life is ALWAYS improving!

You made a great post and I’m getting off my ass and getting to work right now on finishing something that I’ve been putting off with my business! Thanks bud!

I remember that interview with Frank and John it was pretty interesting. Another point which you brought up and it was a very valued point is when you were saying you know if your product isn’t good. Well what do you do if it isn’t good? Sit on your ass and complain, or get up and take action by improving it?

I like the philosophy that I learned in English class awhile back “there is no such thing as a final draft” which makes me think “their is no such thing as a final product” because no matter what, there is always room for improvement.

Really glad you liked the post man :D

Oh how I was that way. I’m really gonna take tghe just do it approach with my blog move, maybe even to the other extreme…I’m going live directly after moving all the posts/comments over – bare theme and all, to be worked on “live”. ;)

You know, it amazes me so much that just when I think I have found all the information there is to find out there, who could possibly come up with something even better or even written differently with the same message, I do find something even better.

I have a blog project that I’m still working out the few details of before launching it next month. My reason to wait is I’m not quite ready with a few major details (not mentioning too much here) that once are worked out, it will go live.

After reading this however, I think I should seriously look at the details and consider launching it before hand.

Thanks for this great article. You never know your product until your customers are happy or unhappy. Then you know which direction to take.

Great stuff here! :)

P.S. Thanks for the insight. I might “surprise” launch this thing before February… Don’t tell anyone lol.

Eric, I rally don’t want to step on any toes; Rob’s advioce IS spot on…for 99% of the time.

However, if you really do have MAJOR details to work out, then I wouldn’t advise rushing the launch. That can backfire worse then waiting sometimes.

I kind of agree when it comes to blogging or doing a blogging sites. BUT if were are talking about software u never get anything that is perfect But if you design a software product offline or online at least it has to work and do what you say it does..
