The power of guest posting

by Nicholas Cardot on November 27, 2009 · 42 comments

Guest posting is an amazing way to connect with other bloggers and to reach out to the blogging community around you. Yet so many people are hesitant to write guest posts because they require so much extra work. But I’m here to tell you that the work is well worth it.

In fact, I recently launched a guest posting marathon at my website and I’ve had fantastic results. I’ve been writing an average of 5 guest posts per day since I launched it.

Why would I put myself through that? Easy. Here’s four reasons that I write guest posts and these same reasons should motivate you to start writing some.

Backlinks

One of the great benefits of guest posting is the unique opportunity to create non-spam links back to your own website. One of the major factors that Google and other similar search engines uses in order to determine how valuable a site is are links to that site.

A website with the word ‘elephant’ linked to it six million times will probably rank well for the search phrase ‘elephant’. It’s always appropriate to place at most one or two links back to your site in an author’s note at the bottom of an article just like you see at the bottom of this one.

Exposure

One of the main reasons that many people don’t visit our sites isn’t because we don’t provide amazing content…it’s because they’ve never heard of us. Guest posting is a terrific way to get yourself out in front of a whole new audience. It’s terrific because people who’ve never heard of you before will have the opportunity to see what you are all about.

Credibility

There are 100 million blogs in existence today. Which ones get followed? The credible ones.

When people see other bloggers allowing you to blog on their sites then it adds the weight of that other blogger behind your credibility. It says to the world that this other blogger believes in you and is proud to have your material on their website.

Self-Improvement

I learned in college that writing is one of the best ways to learn about something that you’re unfamiliar with. It’s great because of the process of research, outlining, planning and then actually putting your ideas to paper. Despite what some others may recommend, I’m all about stepping outside my niche, learning something new, and writing a post on it. Guest posting is a great way to learn new subjects.

Now don’t put it off another minute. Contact one of your blogging buddies and put together a guest post for them. It’s well worth the time and effort.

I did a post like this yesterday.

One problem can be finding blogs to guest post on, so I have set up a list of blogs that accept guest posts! (If you are not on the list you can request to be added).

@David: it’s a great list.
I believe guest posting is the revolution of blogging these days when all bloggers out there already know and apply common tactics such as commenting, social networking etc.

Good point Phaoloo, guest posting also builds good credibility and helps you adapt relationships with other readers, which is a important aspect of blogging.

Guest posting is handy and can bring good backlinks, exposure and traffic, but you need to make sure that your article is of good quality.

I like self improvement. The more your write, the better you are. You don’t even have to start out as someone who knows his way around a keyboard. The most important thing when writing a guest post on a blog is that you are giving the blog owner a week off since he or she doesn’t have to write that week and that’s the best thing when making friends and a community :)

Right on the dot bro. Another thing is it builds your credibility and helps build a better relationship with you and the blog owner.

Forgive the skepticism.

Ciao everyone, I am bran-new to the site, but I have been looking for this website for a very long time and I’m so happy I finally got here.

I’m 22 years of age and doing my bachelors at Dartmough.

I’m the kind of guy who passions to seek revolutionary stuff. Right now I’m constructing my own pv panels. I am doing it all alone without the assistance of my staff. I am using the internet as the only path to acheive that. I came across a very awesome website that explains how to build pv panels and wind generators. The web site explains all the steps involved in making solar panels.

I am not really sure about how accurate the data given there is. If some guys over here who have xp with these work can have a look and give your feedback in the page it would be grand and I would really appreciate it.

Thanks for reading this. U people rock.

Good post. I’m reading a lot of good things about guest posting. And I’ve found several interesting blogs by following links in guest posts on other blogs, so I believe it works really well.
I guess I should get started with writing some guest-posts, then. :)

Cheers,
Shane

Another great post Rob. Keep up the good work.

I’m a blogger in Jamaica in the Caribbean. Blogging is fairly new in Jamaica, but the numbers are growing at a moderate pace. I would love for someone who has been blogging for some time to do a guest post on my blog – . Maybe a post on blogging tips and all the great potentials that exist. The majority of persons here really are not aware of how informative and amazing blogs really are.

Thanks a lot.

I’m starting to learn the real power of guest posting. It lets you get over that “new website hump” much faster than trying to gain organic search engine traffic which is usually a slow process.

Great information Rob! I totally agree. There is a challenge and a learning experience in guess posting because it challenges you to think out the box that you’re ordinary used to writing in and just as you said, there’s a learning experience in writing about topics that you’re unfamiliar with. Very inspiring post! Thanks for the information!

In fact guest blogging does take some extra time but I find that the value that it adds to my website is more than article directories.

If I were to choose between writing for an article directories or a guest blog, I will definitely choose the latter as it provides more value to my blog.

Great points all around. I think being able to share your voice and build authority is the greatest benefit of guest posting.

A backlink and traffic is nice but I would trade a solid relationship with the blog owner over a one time visit any day.

I’d simply check to see if they have a guest-post page, if so follow those guidelines. If they don’t, then go ahead and email them to see if they are willing to accept a guest post from you.
