Spam is annoying, we all hate it. It can consume a lot of your time searching through hundreds of spam comments trying to see which ones are real and which ones aren’t. There have been days where I’ve neglected checking spam comments and it raked up into the thousands. Surfing through all the spam took hours. Also, don’t forget about the super-slick spammers who make their comments appear “real” but they really aren’t.

How to stop spam from your blog, once and for all

Conditional CAPTCHA

During a skype conversation with one of my buddies Joe Boyle, I was bitching about how I hate going through spam comments. He laughed at me at first, then told me about this plug-in he used called Conditional CAPTCHA which stopped spam on his blog once and for all. I decided to try it out, and worked like a charm.

If you have Askimet (if you don’t I recommend installing it), Conditional CAPTCHA is an additional add-on to this plug-in. What this does is, whenever a spam comment is detected the commentator would be asked to fill in a CAPTCHA field. If they fill out the form correctly, the comment is approved. If they do not, the comment is marked as spam.

Ever since I’ve installed this plug-in, I have not received one spam comment since.

Download plug-in: Conditional CAPTCHA

Group Discussion

What are some ways you eliminate or help stop spam on your blog? Do you recommend any plug-ins? Have you tried this one, if so how do you like it?

Last week I decided to grab the Ninja Affiliate plug-in for WordPress. The plug-in was told to be good, some friends said they had good results with it… so I said why not try it out? In about… I’d say 10-15 minutes after playing around with it, I was in love with it. I felt that even though this is a $97 plug-in, it will truly benefit me and any-other affiliate tremendously in the long-run.

My thoughts on the Ninja Affiliate WordPress Plug-in

What is Ninja-Affiliate?

Ninja-Affiliate is a WordPress plug-in for affiliate marketers. What you can do with this plug-in is cover your affiliate links with personal branded links. For example: http://www.domain.com/?affID=3994 would be – http://www.yourdomain.com/likes/chicken. The new link is directing your visitor to the same page, using your affiliate link and you will still be credited for the sale. Ninja-Affiliate also takes any keywords you chose and auto-links them with the link of your choice (Thank you!).

Why I recommend Ninja Affiliate

Taking it beyond converting keywords into high-converting affiliate links, Ninja Affiliate also allows you to track the amount of clicks each link gets. This can allow you to do some split-testing and see which keywords perform best, which keywords convert higher. Also, say one day an affiliate program you are using decides to drop their program. Sadly for you… that just happened to be one of the affiliate products you promoted highly so you ahd links all through out your site. With Ninja Affiliate, you can just go in the back-end and edit the link, then BAM your done. Saves the hassle and hassling around with tons of affiliate links.

Who should use Ninja Affiliate?

I would personally recommend Ninja-Affiliate to any affiliate who is ready to make a serious income online from affiliate-marketing. I understand the price of $97 can be a bit scary for people, but it will increase your affiliate sales tremendously. Even Ninja Affiliate understands $97 is a nifty price to be paying, so they offer a 60 day money back guarantee for anyone who is skeptical.

Overall thoughts

For a paid WordPress plug-in, I give it two thumbs up and a recommendation from me to check out. I personally use it myself and I have not had any problems with it yet. Installation was no different than any other WordPress plug-in and the ease to use was very simple. I’ve had it on my blog and I’ve loved it

I proudly host my site on WordPress and ever since my switch to WordPress I have been more than pleased with the options. I wrote a post earlier on about 5 killer WordPress plug-ins that I like, but with the thousands of WordPress plug-ins on the web there have been quite a few that contributed to the success of Robswebtips.

How I increase discussions and encourage commenting

Commentluv

Commentluv is a plug-in that if you don’t have, get it now! Well. . . after you read this awesome post that is. Commentluv is a plug-in that allows commentators to show their most recent blog post.

Ever seen that before on your comments, or someone elses? Well that’s commentluv and it’s a great plug-in to have on your blog.

Download Commentluv

Dofollow comments

By default WordPress adds an evil no follow attribute to commentators links, this blocks search engines from indexing the commentators link and that means no link love. Grr. . . evil WordPress is reducing m chances of getting more comments to my blog. Well if you want to say bye bye to the no follow link, the Dofollow comments plug-in replaces the no follow attribute with a do follow attribute. This way, your commentators will be more happy commenting on your blog.

Download Dofollow comments

Get recent comments

It’s important to build conversation on your blog and no better way to do it, than to show users what are the new trending discussions on your blog. Ever noticed in my footer I show the latest discussions? The get recent comments plug-in allows me to easily show the newest discussions that are going on around my blog. This not only helps me drive more traffic to other posts, but encourage users to engage in article discussions.

Download Get recent comments

Reply me

When you reply to a commentators comment, there not going to know you replied unless they come back and check. Nine times out of ten, there is not a chance in hell they will be back to check if you replied or not. So why not let them get notified VIA email when they receive a response on their comment. Not just by you, but anyone who decides to reply. Reply me is a plug-in I use that emails a commentator each time they receive a response to their comment. This plug-in is not like subscribe to comments, it will not email your commentator every time there is a new comment on that article.

Download Reply me

Top commentators widget

If you ever noticed on my sidebar I like to reward commentators for being active with a dofollow link back to their site. Every month I have it reset so it’s fair play for all readers, new and old. The top commentators widgets help encourage readers comment on my articles because they know if they participate enough they will get rewarded for it. This plug-in is an easy install and set up. So within a matter of minutes you can have your readers fighting to achieve the title of top commentator and a link back from your blog. Watch your readers grab their swords and fight like bloody hell to make it to the top!

Download Top commentators widget

Subscribe to comments

Subscribe to comments is a plug-in I use for readers who really want to engage on the juicy conversations that go on here at Robswebtips. Subscribe to comments allows your readers to select the option to get notified each time there is a new comment on that article. Giving them opportunity to engage in the conversation.

Download Subscribe to comments

Search engine optimization

Recently Robswebtips hit a pagerank of 4 and I thank a couple of plug-ins I’ve used to help boost my search engine love.

All in one SEO pack

I use the All in one SEO pack because that literally what it is. An easy to use SEO plug-in that takes away the pain and countless hours of cussing at your computer because you’re trying to insert meta tags into your post.

Download the All in one SEO pack

Google XML sites

The quicker it is for robots to index your site, the faster your site will get indexed and the better rankings you can get. Google XML sitemaps automatically generates a sitemap for your blog and you can easily submit your sitemap link to your Google webmasters account for quick and easy indexing.

Google Analytics for WordPress

I love Google analytics, it helps me track my visitor statistics, website traffic and a ton more. In order for me to get accurate results I wanted to make sure I had my tracking code embedded in all the pages of my site. To cure my solution I found the Google Analytics plug-in for WordPress which automatically places my Google tracking code in all my pages.

Download Google Analytics for WordPress

Easy accessible content

I use a couple of plug-ins that have really helped resurrect my old posts back to life.

Popular Posts, Recent posts , Similar posts & Random posts

In my sidebar and in my footer I display my most popular posts and my most recent posts. This lets my readers get a feel for what’s new and what’s popular here at Robswebtips. As a blogger it’s important to understand that the more accessible your content is to your reader, the better.

These plug-ins by Rob Marsh have helped me triple the traffic on my site, increase my subscription rate and made my readers more happy.

Download Popular posts
Download Recent posts

Download Random posts
Download Similar posts

IMPORTANT: If you want to install any of these plug-ins, you need to install Rob Marsh’s post plug-in libary plug-in.

WordPress security

With all the assholes that try to attack your site out there it’s important to keep your blog safe. I use a couple plug-ins that help ensure the security of my blog and readers.

Login lockdown

To prevent someone from hacking into your account or any of your other users, Login lockdown is a great plug-in to have. Your allowed to set it so after a user has X failed number of log-in attempts their IP is blocked from logging into to your blog for however long you set it to.

Download Login lockdown

WordPress security scan

Just a basic WordPress security scan to make sure all parts of your blog is safe and secure.

Download WordPress security scan

Random (but useful) plug-ins

Tweetme

Tweetme displays a mini tweetme button on the top of my post encouraging users to tweet my article if they like it. Nothing wrong with letting your post go viral on WordPress right?

Download Tweetme

WP Super cache

WordPress Super Cache is a plug-in that helps my site go lighting fast, this plug-in is a caching plug-in for WordPress. If you don’t have it, I suggest installing it now, even if you think your blog is fast. This plug-in will make it faster.

Download WP Super Cache

After the deadline

Yea I know, I’m not the best speller in the world. Since I absolutely refuse to sit through another 7 week English class, I downloaded After the Deadline plug-in which checks all my grammatical errors. This one is much better than the default WordPress spellcheck.

Download After the deadline plug-in

Contact form 7

A simple contact form I use on my contact page for my readers to easily contact me.

Thanks to WordPress, bloggers are allowed to use thousands of awesome plug-ins to tweak their blog. But let’s face it, actually taking the time to search through the thousands of WordPress plug-ins that are out there and finding ones that are suitable for you can be time consuming.

In this post I’m going to share with you 5 killer WordPress plug-ins that are worth having on your blog.

TweetMe

Tweetme is an awesome plug-in to help you go viral on Twitter. This plug-in automatically displays a mini “Tweet this” widget into each of your posts. This plug-in encourages users to tweet your new articles, instead of leaving them flat in the dust.

Download plug-in: Tweetme

Login Lockdown

Login Lockdown is a great plug-in to help prevent hackers, and other fishy people that try to get access to your WordPress account without your permission. Log-in lock down records the IP of every failed log-in on your site, and if a IP has “X” failed log-ins Login-Lockdown will automatically banned that IP from your site for a set period of time.

This plug-in is ideal for all blogs big and small. Let’s face it; they are thousands of hackers out here…so why not take one step closer to keeping your blog safe?

Download plug-in: Login Lockdown

OIO-Publisher

If your blog sells banner ads on your site, OIO-Publisher is definitely a plug-in worth investing in. OIO-Publisher gives your advertisers the upper advantage in buying ads on your site by being the “middle man” in your sales. Instead of waiting countless hours, going back and forth through email discussing your ad pricing and payment for an ad on your site. OIO-Publisher has a fully integrated payment system which allows your advertisers to right away without you having to move a finger.

Purchase: OIO-Publisher ($47.00 – onetime payment)

After the deadline

After the deadline is a more enhanced spell-checking that checks for more than just your common spelling errors. After the deadline is a great plug-in for bloggers both newbie and experienced in the writing field. This plug-in also works wonderful for bloggers who have to continually transfer their work from WordPress to Microsoft Word to spell check everything.

Download plug-in: After the deadline

Dofollow comments

Dofollow comments removes the evil “nofollow” attribute WordPress adds into your users comments, so they get no link love back to their site. With Dofollow comments the evil “nofollow” attribute is removed and replaced with a “dofollow” attribute. This way when search engines index your site, they will index he commentators link as well.

Download this plug-in: Dofollow comments

Maintenance mode

Don’t you hate it when you’re switching to a new WordPress theme and your site goes all corrupt in the process while it’s live? So now all your readers have to see this “mess” that you call your site. Avoid situations like this with maintenance mode plug-in. Maintenance mode sends your readers to a nice page saying “this site is currently under maintenance check back in “X” minutes/hours” this will avoid the worries of sending your readers to a bunch of 404pages.

Download plug-in: Maintenance mode

Bonus: NextGen Gallery:

This plugin allows you to turn your WordPress hosting into image hosting. Once you try this image gallery then I don’t think you can do without it.

Download plug-in: NextGen Gallery

A mailing list is a great way to keep track and update with your visitors and readers. It’s important to not stray away from your readers but keep it contact. Your readers and visitors want to know that you care, so show them that you care by keeping in contact. Mailing software I like using and referring to is Aweber.

Aweber offers a great way to connect with your valued readers by offering a mailing list. They give you unlimited features such as, email templates, click thru rate tracking, forms and more. Best part is they offer this great service for a low rate of $19/month. I go into depth about Aweber with my article about it here.
Becoming connected with your visitors is great. Not only does it show your readers that you care it also keeps them coming back and lets you decipher your quality readers from your average readers.

Optimize your power! Know what your reader expects

Okay, they took the time to subscribe so you should take the time to provide right? If they took the time to subscribe to your mailing list that must mean they see some value in your work right? So keeps it coming! Send weekly surveys to your readers asking what their favorite article was and why? Maybe ask them what articles they would like to see. Keep connected never branch away from your subscribers. Remember they took the time to subscribe now it’s time for you to keep them subscribed.

Never stop building your subscribers

Okay maybe you have got 1,000 subscribers does that mean stop? HECK NO! Keep building if you’ve reached 1,000 why stop? Strive for 2,000 – 3,000 hecks even go off on the limb and aim for 10,000 there is no limit! Remember this is a great way to keep traffic coming back to your website. If you’re not running a blog people are not going to constantly check to see when you published a new article so why don’t you go ahead and tell them. Each time you release a new article on your website go ahead and launch an email saying “Hey I’ve released a new article” but don’t just leave it at that… Explain it; give a small but brief summary about what it is about.
Offer your subscribers something to tempt them to subscribe. For example “Hey subscribe and receive my free eBook” or “By subscribing you’ll receive weekly website tips to improve your site” offer your subscribers something for free. Everyone loves something for free.
Remember, quality visitors are always better than average visitors. Your quality visitors are the ones that really care about what you have to offer and see the value in your website. Often times they will link back to your site because they enjoy it so much. Higher page rank, woo woo!

Think you’ll like Aweber? Sign up here!
